Day 31 – 33 Frogging in Louisiana

13th – 15th July

Our time in New Orleans felt short and like most of the states we had already visited in the US, I know that I could have spent a week there and still not seen everything. As always though we were keen to get moving as there was still so many places to experience and we had past the half way point on the trip.

Our next destination took us to Henderson, LA. The home of the original Swamp People – that is a self confessed title by the way. We met up at McGee’s Landing with David Allmond, the owner and local frogger. David was an incredible character, he knew alot of the 835,000 acre swamp like no other. Although he had not been able to see all of it, he was pretty close. That night he took us frogging. A local delicacy from these parts and unlike most places, David is known for cooking and serving the whole frog.

We left the harbour at 8pm and went searching and hunting for 7 hours. The swamp that we were in was the main highlight for me. It was stunning seeing these trees and wildlife from the airboat.

The next day, even though we didn’t get to sleep till 3am we were back up early at 7am to cook some of our spoils. David showed me his recipe that also Jamie Oliver had helped him with. After breakfast I was back on the bike and of course true to history, the thunderstorm had caught up to. By now I was used to it, 4 hours till we arrive in to Houston. Then we are off to Bandera, Texas. Yee-haw.

Keep up with Charley’s journey on Facebook and Twitter, and check out photos from Louisiana in the gallery.
