That storm hit us around 1am. I had not been able to grab even 3 hours sleep, as I still was not accustomed to sleeping on boats. I think we can all agree that experience had taught me to be weary. As we came up on to the deck, lighting and thunder was rumbling in the distance. The waves were not too bad, yet, but the whole crew could feel there was trouble ahead. We woke everyone up sooner than planned at 5am and began the long process of getting the sails up in order to take off early and miss the storm.
2 hours later we were in the heart of the storm. We had another 2 hours until we reached the Harbour and the rain was not letting up. The 135 ton ship held her course but she swayed like a baby’s cradle. As water washed in on both sides, me and the crew ran around the boat to keep her steady and adjust the sails. It was an incredible experience but all I was thinking about was getting back on to dry land and getting that RGS1200.
