Day 44 – Land sailing in Austin

Having travelled to Ely the night after the Salt Flats, I woke up in a very historic (for America) and vibrant small community. It was not quite what I had expected of Nevada, apart from the gambling.

There was no time for sightseeing and casual shopping, we had miles to get under the belt  and an adventure to get too. We travelled from Ely to Austin, NV. Here we met Bob Casey and Milena Regos. Two people passionate about extreme sports and today we were going to try Land sailing. Personally I didn’t see Land Sailing as the most extreme sport and as we headed out to a sandy plain outside Austin in the Black Powder Basin, I thought I was right.

We set up the BloKart and as I got in I felt a little more excited. The wind was not that strong at the beginning but this have me a good period to get the hang of the ropes. Obviously it didn’t take me long! Then as the afternoon carried on the wind picked up and we suddenly where able to fly around! The wheels were coming up and the turns became incredibly dodgy. It was an exhilarating sport! Maybe not the most extreme thing you could do but my god what a thrill. Russ decided to have a go as well. As a keen sailor he was doing very well, I think possibly he thought he was better than he was though as within ten minutes he had crashed it. Memories flashed back instantly as I saw him upside down…again.
