Day 20 + 21 – Driving through North Carolina, and diving on a WWII U-Boat

2nd July

We had a 5 hour drive ahead of us down to Beaufort, NC. So in order to break up the day I thought it would be nice if the crew and the EagleRider guys stopped off half way to eat some traditional Eastern North Carolina BBQ. We stopped at the Skylight Inn and enjoyed probably the uniquest way I have ever seen to cook a hog. They cook it whole. In a pit. It took hours. Absolutely delicious.

The drive continued and I was really enjoying the North Carolina way of life and the attitude that people had towards others. Everyone was very welcoming and  incredibly pleased to meet new faces. We finally arrived in Beaufort which I was excited about, as here was one of the last Wild Horse colonies on the planet. Its was not so much seeing them, but understanding how they got there that fascinated me.

Our final adventure in Beaufort had us up very early as we still needed to get back on the bikes and drive to Charlotte today! Up a 6am we were about to embark on a dive of a German WWII U-Boat. Purposely sunk by the Germans when they realised they had no chance of winning, it was now a Gravesite of 11 men, who did not escape.

We were taken out on a boat that seemed like it was from around the same era as the U-Boat. This just added to the overall feel of the piece! Very rarely have I been allowed to dive without any guides, especially in an area I was not familiar, but this was the case for me, Russ and Phil. It was magnificent but no one had really mentioned the size of the sharks.

Check out photos of the teams dive in the gallery, and keep up with their journey on Facebook and Twitter.
