Day 2 – Hawaii boat race

Waking up on the glass desert of the Lava Field was an incredible experience. As you can maybe see here I had caught the sun slightly from the day before, but nothing to write home about. It was an early 4am start for us as we travelled across the rest of the island. We managed to see the sunrise from an incredible viewpoint, and over the next day we got a good insight into how the locals live on the island. Pele, the name they give to the volcano, was a strong presence on this island and I would be lying if I did not feel the impact that it had on the people who lived there. Although I would have liked to have stayed longer, we were given a tip about a traditional Va’a Hawaiian Canoe race that was happening on the Island of Oahu. That afternoon we travelled to the airport and flew over to Oahu.

Another reason for wanting to go to Oahu was because there waiting for me was a BMW F800GS, the baby brother of the F1200GS that I would also be riding when we finally arrive on mainland America.
