Charley Boorman Log- Day 14

June 25, 2012

In which Charley investigates Bunny Chow. Bunny Chow

We travel the rest of the way into Durban for a rest stop and to give the bikes a service. We’re pushing them hard and it’s only going to get harder.

Durban is the centre of South Africa’s Indian population and that makes it the curry captial. A distinctly African take on curry is Bunny Chow (or just “Bunny”), which sees a quater or half loaf of white bread scooped out and filled with curry. The scooped out bread is then placed back on top and voila! Bunny Chow – Best eaten with the fingers. The history of it’s unusual name is disputed, but it’s likely to be a corruption of “Bania”, the name of the Indian caste the food’s inventors belonged to.

If we do nothing else in Durban, we’re definitely going on a Bunny hunt.
