Experience the chaos of Indian city life.

India is one of the most beautiful, colourful and vibrant countries in the world and nothing symbolises this better than rowing down the Ganges and arriving, at dusk, in Varanasi, the most sacred city in Hinduism.

Many find any activity in India impossibly overwhelming – the traffic, the smells, the bustling hive of activity everywhere you look. The streets are full of people, rickshaws and cows. Every inch is covered with signs and everyone is embarked on some kind of frenetic business or other.

However, as soon as you get out on the water this character disappears completely. It becomes far easier to take in the beauty of what is around you, and contemplate what it means to be in this ancient country.

To get to Varanasi you’ll need to find a boatman and haggle to get a good price. It’s then a two-day journey down river so you’ll have to find places to camp on the banks. Once you arrive in this most sacred city you are assaulted with a feast for all the senses. The first thing you notice are the ornate spires rising up above the temples, then the smell of incense from the countless ceremonies reaches your nostrils before you begin to hear the chanting these ceremonies include, you notice the candles and flower garlands laid in the river by pilgrims visiting in their white robes and then finally you notice the funeral pyres as the bodies are burned to release the spirits ready for reincarnation.

As you approach the shore you start to feel the buzz of India’s fast pace again and within moments you are back into the absorbing maelstrom of Indian city life. Intrepid Travel can help with this journey down the Ganges.
