Be a turtle lifesaver!
This is a truly worthy adventure. You, the lucky eco warrior will get the amazing chance to help save leatherback sea turtles from extinction at one of the most important remaining nesting beaches in the world. We’re seriously jealous of this one. You even get to stay in the ‘Wild West’ of Costa Rica, in beach duplexes. Below is what the organisers of the project- Earthwatch- have to say:
‘Each night on the beaches you’ll be able to monitor nesting leatherbacks, measure and tag them, record next locations, and count eggs to help researchers determine which factors-from El Nino and La Nina to coastal development-influence nesting success for this critically endangered species.’
Wow. Sounds cool huh? And in addition to this you may also have the chance to move threatened nests to a hatchery, protect adorable hatchlings as they amble towards the sea, excavate nests, and rescue any of turtles that are in danger. Of course there is also the chance to help with all the scientific equipment, if deemed appropriate, or to help with the turtle hatchery.
And after a full day on ‘turtle patrol’ is there any better way to spend your evening than swimming in the sea, or watching the sun set on the beach?
