Sail a felucca down the Nile

About this Adventure

Fact File
Duration: Customised.
Cost: Customised.

Take part in this unusual adventure, and sail the traditional Egyptian boat down the Nile.

Occasionally a really good adventure can be turned into a great one by the use of a specific form of transport, whether it’s something that fits the adventure, like riding a Harley across America, or totally unexpected like skiing the Himalayas, it manages to take the trip to another level. Sailing a felucca down the Nile is one of these occasions.

Feluccas are traditional wooden sailing boats which have plied the protected waters of the Nile for centuries. Sailing one of these down the Nile links this trip to the past and also offers a far more peaceful journey than by motorboat. Waking up on a boat with the sunrise and drifting along the Nile is an amazing way to travel through the country.

We recommend travelling from Cairo, passing the great pyramids of Giza, upriver to Thebes and Luxor. The joy of the felucca is you can travel at your own pace, as long as the wind allows you. So if you want to stop off at marvels like Abu Simbel you can, but if you want to plough on further south to make up time you can do too. This is an indepenent adventure, and one that is the perfect coming together of transport and location.

Explore can help organise your felucca adventure.
