About this Adventure

Duration: 10 hours

Travel through the Andes to Cuzco on this amazing old train route.

At Big Earth we are partial to a great train journey; they are a great way to see the world, and a chance to meet fellow travellers and swap stories, as you thunder through amazing landscapes. We also like the imagery of narrow strips oftrack heading off into the wilderness; it’s a powerful symbol of mankind’s attempts to make the inaccessible, accessible and that is a great starting point for any adventure.

Whether it’s the TranzAlpine in New Zealand, the Trans Siberian in Eastern Europe and Asia or the West Highland Line in Scotland, some of the world’s most amazing journeys are improved by trains and the Andean Explorer is just another example of this. Starting from Puno on the Peruvian side of Lake Titicaca it clambers through the altiplano, a land of snow-capped mountains and herds of llamas, before descending into more green landscapes. Clinging to the side of the river Vilcanota the train passes through adobe villages where locals display goods across the tracks and dash away when the train comes.

As with all great train journey, this doesn’t just let you experience the great scenery, it adds to the experience in its own right. This is a great adventure and is also a useful way of getting between two great destinations.
