Take part in an exciting wildlife rescue campaign in Canada…
Another day. Another worthwhile adventure from Earthwatch. Animal conservation projects are often the most loved of all, and some people find them incredibly therapeutic. This is a great one.
The basic goal is to protect the Pacific grey whales by tracking them in their summer feeding grounds and monitoring the North American river otters that share the same waters. As a volunteer on the project you will join gentle, grey whales in their Canadian summer feeding areas in Clayoquot Sound and the surrounding waters off the west coast of Vancouver Island, to help researchers create the best possible defence and protection system for the mammals. It is important to discover whether climate change is having a serious effect on the population, and so depending on field conditions, you will spend a lot of time monitoring local river otters (which are adorable) to see how they are faring in the shared waters.
On this project you’ll also spend days on the w
ater in a kayak, or in a converted fishing boat searching for whales, and mapping their prey with sonar and underwater video. Again, just like the Grecian dolphin project, you will also learn to recognize individual whales by their own markings, scars, and be able to track them.
After a hard day’s work on the coast, you will have the opportunity to relax by exploring the nearby coves and islands by kayak, or exploring the Ahousaht village the project is located in.
