The Inspiration
Everyone’s got a bucket list, and most often it’s almost entirely populated with adventures and travel destinations. Big Earth’s own adventurer extraordinaire Russ Malkin has just crossed another item off his bucket list and this one was a long time coming. Spanning 2 continents, 3 countries and 8 time zones, was a thrilling once in a life-time 2 week adventure on the Trans Siberian Express!

The Trans Siberian Express has something for everyone. If you’re a fan of rail travel, this is definitely for you – after all, you do spend most of the trip on a train. However, this is no ordinary train experience.

You can really tailor this adventure to your likes.

Russ had always wanted to do this trip during the holiday season. This meant braving the cold!
The views are spectacular no matter the time of year but if you’re looking for adventure in Doctor Zhivago-esque style, you’ll have to brave the below freezing temperatures of the Siberian winter.

If this sounds cold, very cold, that’s because it is. But of the two weeks only 5-6 days are spent away from the train, and taking in the unrivalled sights and exciting activities offered by the Trans Siberian adventure, there is very little time to notice the cold – being able to see your breath against the backdrop of Moscow’s famed architecture or the mountain valleys of Mongolia becomes a sight you marvel at. Finally, you reach beautiful Beijing and the myriad attractions awaiting you in the Chinese capital, for the last leg of this unforgettable trip.

The Route
Here’s the route Russ and the Big Earth crew took on their Great Trans Siberian Adventure from Moscow to Beijing:

How To Do It

This is a trip which covers a lot of ground in a relatively short amount of time. If you would like it to go seamlessly our advice is to do it through an experienced travel agent.

Russ did the Trans Siberian Express trip with the incredible help of On The Go Tours, who are specialists in this field and with their affiliate offices in Russia, Mongolia and China they will help you with every little detail of your Trans Siberian experience, including the tricky things you might not have thought about yourself such as invitations to Russia and Mongolia, without which you cannot enter the country. On The Go can also help you to fill out your visa applications, advise you what to pack and to secure the type of cabin you want on the train: 2 berth, 4 berth single occupancy… whatever your choice and budget allows. If you want to experience the real deal you’ll want to get off the train in Mongolia to take in a traditional Ger camp experience. On The Go tours can organise activities depending on the weather. In summer you can experience the grandeur of the Mongolian mountains and go horse riding in the valley of the Terelj River.

Should you choose to follow in Russ’ footsteps and go in winter, you’ll get to try the unique experience of dog sledding followed by surviving the night in a Ger tent, where sleep will be scare as you keep the wood burner going to keep you warm through the night.
