Himalaya Mountaineering

About this Adventure

Fact File:
Duration: 40 days
Price: 4357 GBP

Learn the art of mountaineering as you climb through the highest mountain range in the world.

Dev Bhoomi, the Himalayan “The Abode of the Gods,” is a land steeped in culture, history, and mythology. The holy Ganges River is born in these mountains, and some of the trails here are the oldest trade routes between India and Tibet. Mountaineering at these altitudes requires endurance, but the staggering beauty of the high ranges, the rich history of its ancient civilizations, and the cultural interactions with mountain villages makes a Himalayan expedition with NOLS, the National Outdoor Leadership School, well worth the effort.

You will begin in the mountain town of Ranikhet in the state of Uttarakhand, a peaceful rural haven with spectacular views of the Himalayas where you will acclimatize before heading for the high country of the Kumaon and Garhwal regions.

Along the way, you will learn how to travel responsibly in the wilderness, how to plan an international expedition, how to interact with the local peoples, high altitude physiology and backcountry medicine, and of course, the more technical mountaineering skills that will allow you to travel through rugged Himalayan terrain. You’ll hike through subtropical forests and high alpine meadows at 6,000 feet, and travel across glaciers that may be as high as 18,000, attaining heights you never thought possible—both in elevation and in learning.

With the benefit of at least one Indian field instructor, you’ll learn about the natural and cultural history of the region, including its languages, food, and mythology. You will leave with the skills you need to lead your own mountaineering expedition, and fond memories of your own epic Himalayan journey.
