Explore the many reefs and glorious Pacific waters of Chile.
Chile is well known as a paradise for scuba diving fans because of its varied ecosystems. We already know and love Chile, but it is not often touted as a hugely successful diving location. However this is all tosh- as we’ll show you.
To begin with Easter Island is a wonderful diving destination. Its waters are warm, clean and offer absolutely fantastic visibility for up to 60 metres. (No surprise shark attacks then!) You’ll find a wide variety of colourful, native fish as well as underwater caves that were explored by Jacques Cousteau himself! It is also amazing, that for such a great destination, there are not that many divers. The best spots on the island are Anakena Beach, Las Ancoras Reef, with its submerged Moai statue, El Arca Perdida and Moto Niu Cliff- an 80-metre precipice which is entirely adorned with coral!
Juan Fernandez is another undersea paradise, with clear waters and a very varied and numerous fish population, as well as lobsters. Other, more playful inhabitants include the Juan Fernandez seals, which number 40,000 in the area. The seabed drops sharply to 4,000 metres all around the island, which enables diving conditions for beginners and more experienced divers.
On the outskirts of Coquimbo, near Punda de Choros, you’ll find Isla Damas, with its fine white sands and turquoise waters. You can dive with Humboldt penguins, otters and hundreds of bottlenose dolphins.
So it all sounds wonderful doesn’t it? A rich area of relatively unexplored diving options! For more information check out the Chilean Tourist Board below.
