Discover the beauty of Brunei, in the most traditional way.
Not all adventures need to be packed full adrenaline-fuelled danger, we appreciate exploring the culturally unique just as much as we do trekking through jungles and the Stilt village of Brunei is one such example.
The village, it’s really more of a town, Kampong Ayer, is home to 39,000 people and it’s not a recent settlement, the area has been inhabited for more than 1,300 years, and is known as the Venice of the East, an indication of how well established a trade hub this peculiar town must have been when it was developing.
Brunei is known today primarily for the extraordinary wealth its oil reserves have give it, and the royal family are among the wealthiest individuals in the world. This wealth has given this town another dimension because the wealth doesn’t stop at the water’s edge, the houses have running water, satellite TV, internet access, in fact everything you’d expect of a modern settlement.
Just wandering along the 19 miles of wooden footbridges is an adventure in itself, but it’s also possible to get out on the water in local long canoes on which you can fish or visit the baboon colonies living upriver. What’s most amazing is that here, in the middle of a pristine jungle, you’re no more than an hour from a major travel hub, meaning this is an adventure you could if you have a stopover in Brunei.
