Take part in the traditional fishing methods of the people in the Pacific.

It is a fantasy of many people to spend the night on an uninhabited desert island, far from the madding crowd, at one with nature, and looking after yourself. For this kind of adventure we can’t think of anywhere more idyllic than the Cook Islands.

We recommend splitting this adventure in two. First go out in a local fisherman’s boat to catch the fish, then find an uninhabited island, set up camp and cook your fish for a perfect insight into how the simple life could feel.

To complete the first part you’ll have to negotiate with a local fisherman to take you out as he searches for the beautiful turquoise Mahi Mahi. Fishing here is a completely different sport to anything we’d heard of before, unique techniques have been built up over centuries which combine with the fisherman’s gut instinct of where to fish to give you a sporting chance of catching your dinner.

The experience isn’t sugar-coated, it’s raw and gives an invaluable insight into where our food comes from. Once the fishing is complete you can set about finding a home for the night. We recommend Maina Island, a tiny speck of land on the reef, where no one has ever dwelled. Once there, settle down and enjoy your fish simply with a few beers, and reflect on your temporary patch of paradise.

Fishing tours can be booked through the Aitutaki Tourist Office (www.aitutakitourism.com) and to stay on Maina Island contact Maina Lodge.
