When a road has been dubbed El Camino de la Muerte (the Road of Death) you immediately get an inkling that it may be a bit more exciting than the M25, and in this case it is certainly the truth. The road snakes through the mountains surrounding on the road which clings to the edge of the mountains with huge drops falling away inches from the road’s edge.
The road’s danger is exacerbated by the mist and the altitude which combined mean reduced visibility and reduced oxygen making the brain slower, especially for those who are yet to acclimatise. Since the opening of a bypass of the most dangerous sections the trucks, the biggest cause of accidents, have deserted the road, and it has got safer for those others using it.
The draw of the road is a combination of the fantastic views a result of the same mountain scenery which makes the road so dangerous, and the thrill of coming to an incredibly dangerous place for thrill-seekers of all nationalities. You can drive along the road, or even better mountain bike it, companies in La Paz drive riders to the highest point and then they can bike downhill to Coroico passing from the thin mountain air into the humid, tropical jungle where you can toast your success with a cold beer.
