Take a swimming lesson in the most dangerous of environments.

Ipala volcano in Guatemala is often overlooked by hikers and climbers because it is, in comparison to many of the volcanoes in Guatemala, quite petite at just 1,650m. The trek to the peak is tiring but rewarding, the dense foliage occasionally opens up affording a great view of the other volcanoes which fill this country. The trek is also a lepidopterist’s dream, the volcano is home to huge numbers of colourful butterflies which add colour to the trek.

However, the adventure of this volcano only begins with the trek to the top, here you are greeted by a large lake which has filled the crater. This is the real challenge – swim across it. At 400m across this is no easy challenge especially as the water is bracing to say the least, and the rocks to unstable to walk back across. It is definitely a return journey once you start.

The reward for this effort is a unique and exciting piece of wild swimming and also a huge surge of achievement once you make it back to your clothes. Russ claims to have got to the other side and back in 52 minutes so that’s your time to beat.
