Climb aboard a Mekong Rocket Boat for a thrilling adventure.

The name rocket boat conjures up images of incredible, unusual forms of transport and the reality is definitely no disappointment. These boats that act as fast taxis along the Mekong river are basically incredibly light, wooden boats with a car engine attached to the rear.

These drag racers of the water are most definitely quick, they can do about 40mph, and certainly exciting. Designed for short journeys, the longer you go, the more this turns into a white-knuckle ride. If you, like Russ did, get caught in a storm it suddenly becomes one of the most uncomfortable and exciting experiences in the world. If waves start getting up this boat is tossed around in a series of bone-jarring landings, and the rain hits your face at such speed it’s like being hit by hailstones.

By this stage the adrenalin is pumping so hard though that none of this matters, you only notice the wind through your hair, the speed the boat is travelling it feels cartoonishly fast, the sort of contraption Wile Coyote would use to try to catch the roadrunner. You can also travel down the Mekong in larger, slower boats and these are more comfortable and more relaxing, but for speed lovers, the rocket boat can’t be beaten.

Flights can be booked at Cambodia Airports and contact Nick Ray to organise your Mekong adventure.
