Bask in the glow of one of nature’s most spectacular phenomenons.

Seeing the Northern Lights is top of the list of many a traveller’s bucket list, but with their unpredictability a trip specifically to see them can end in disappointment unless you have plenty of time to wait for them to play ball.

For that reason we recommend combining it with other activities, and there is plenty to chose from. Lapland or Sampi as the native Sami people call their homeland is high in the arctic and a great starting point for adventures. In this terrain everything takes on a new and exciting feeling.

Options include horse-riding trips out into the frozen landscape from a hotel base, or, if you’re after something even more adventurous, local guides can take you out on expeditions where with the help of sleds pulled by reindeer, and the traditional Sami teepees you can get back to basics and enjoy the remoteness of the arctic and the simple joy of ice-fishing for your lunch.

Finally, if you are lucky enough to catch the light show it is one thing you will never forget. Sami tradition believes the lights are caused by departed souls and are things of great power not to be mocked or even waved at, modern science has identified their cause as solar flares. One thing we can all agree on though is that they are one of nature’s most beautiful and awesome sights.
