Explore the jungle paths and hidden waterways of this amazing national park.
Tortuguero National Park is a haven for a vast array of wildlife; only accessible by plane or boat the area is almost totally deserted and the best way to explore is from the waterways. You get a sense of the scale of the place as you paddle round, and you pull over to the bank and strike out into the heartland far more easily than if you wanted to hike the whole way.
Home to more than 6oo species of animal and 2,200 species of plant it is a wonderland for all wildlife spotters. Most people come to see the turtle populations (tortuga is Spanish for turtle) which clamber up onto the beaches to lay their eggs in the sand of the beaches, but beyond this there is a dizzying array of animals including amazingly bright, colourful tree frogs.
After our daytime paddle we were going to go further into the rainforest at night. These places are impossibly exciting at night, but the mind does wander to the dangers occasionally, home to nasties like scorpions, spiders not to mention the jaguar. For this reason it is wise to go prepared even for the shortest of walks. Proper boots, long sleeves and trousers and plenty of mosquito repellent are vital if this is going to be a pleasant experience. Once you’re kitted out you will see huge numbers of monkeys rushing around, armadillos scuttling out of your way and even, if you’re lucky a giant green turtle lumbering back down to the sea.
