The mystery and excitement of these caves is undeniable.
The Mayan caves were used centuries ago as places of sacrifice, they were believed to be entrances to the underworld. Today, as you stand underground, cramped and in the dark, the stories of the suffering of the sacrificial victims sends a shiver down your spine, it’s one of the creepiest places in the world.
A tour of both fascinating, and upsetting history and beautiful geology squeezing through these caves is an experience not to miss. As you delve deeper underground the caves get ever narrow and are definitely not a place for anyone who doesn’t like enclosed spaces, but for those who can cope with the discomfort, the views are remarkable, stalagmites and stalactites have formed in these caves and, incredibly in some places the two have joined to created imposing columns in the middle of the halls.
Not only is the journey through the caves fantastic, but even the trip to the entrance is special, crossing three streams, all of which need to be swum, reminds one how remote you are, and further reinforces how terrifying it must have been for those about to be sacrificed in these caves. It is remarkably easy to make a connection with them, it feels far less remote than bodies in museums, these people are still lying in the caves where they were killed.
