Explore the majestic area of Guilin by balloon.

The mountains, forests and rivers surrounding the Chinese city of Guilin are as famed for their unforgettable beauty as they are for their tranquillity. What better way to explore this landscape than from above where you can get a sense of how these disparate elements combine, and to ensure you have plenty of time to admire it, we recommend travelling by hot-air balloon.

There is something eerie about the landscape, it is an almost preternatural, but undeniably beautiful sight with thousands of cone-shaped, tree-covered mountains stretch towards the sky, waterfalls crash down from their misty peaks and the Li River winding between the bases.

In this landscape, which feels somehow randomly assembled, the unpredictability of a hot-air balloon makes a perfect companion. As with all forms of transport with no brakes and no steering bar up and down, ballooning is an inexact science, but when the area is so massive it hardly matters if you don’t follow an exact course.

One warning from our experiences; if you’re expecting the balloon to glide serenely up into the air leaving you in a Zen-like state of calm then prepare for a surprise. Take off is a chaotic mix of heat and noise as the pilot fires the burner to get the balloon off the ground and if anything, the landing is worse. However, when floating through the air the balloon comes into its own, the peace descends and you can drink in the view with your eyes. It really is two adventures in one, seeing one of the most bizarre landscapes in the world, from one of the most bizarre forms of transport in the world.
