Spend two and a half months camping in the bush, climbing Kilimanjaro, and exploring the wonders of Tanzania.

A Semester in East Africa with NOLS, the National Outdoor Leadership School, means two and a half months of camping in the bush, exploring the wonders of Tanzania, developing leadership and outdoor skills, meeting new people, learning of new cultures, and pushing yourself physically and emotionally.

This course will take you from the high peaks of Mount Kilimanjaro to the valleys of Ngorongoro Crater and Olduvai Gorge, the home of early man. You will start your expedition with 17 days of backpacking, where you will have opportunities to encounter wildlife you may only have dreamed of seeing, including the “Big Five” species: elephants, cape buffalo, lions, leopards, and rhinos. Your trek will culminate with the summitting of Oldonyo Lengai, an active volcano sitting at 9,469 feet which was featured in Angelina Joline’s film, Laura Croft: Tomb Raider.

Along the way, you will mingle with Masai, Bushmen, Chaga, and Meru people in rural villages. In fact, a Masai tribal member will be your guide and cultural liaison as you travel through Masai lands. You will also visit the pastoralist people of the Mangati/Datoga tribe, the nomadic Hadza and Watindiga groups of the Lake Eyasi Basin, and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, learn about natural history, and visit the wildlife of the area on a safari.

After you become well-versed in trekking through Tanzania’s wild terrain you will move to higher elevations, studying the geology, glaciology, and the unusual flora and fauna found on Mt. Kilimanjaro, and, circumstances permitting, attempt to summit the peak.

Finally, students will have the opportunity to practice their Kiswahili while living with a local family and assisting them with their day-to-day activities, and completing a local service project.

This is one adventure that will not only leave you with a greater understanding of another country and its cultures, but also with an array of skills you can put to good use when you are on your next epic adventure.
