Climb an active volcano, now that’s an adventure

San Salvador volcano looms over the capital of El Salvador and is so close that the outskirts of the capital actually rise up its slopes. An unnerving thought considering the volcano is still considered active despite not having erupted since 1917. This closeness makes it an excellent one-day adventure for anyone in the city.

As with almost all adventures in Central America (and South America) this one starts at the bus station with the challenge of finding the right bus. But once at the volcano the challenge really starts. The climb to the top is not the greatest challenge here, that belongs to the walk all around the rim of the crater formed by the 1917 eruption.

The volcano is so close to the city and it is so spectacular that you might expect it to be crowded but, surprisingly, it isn’t. This all adds up to a great adventure and, even better, once you’ve finished you can head back into the capital to put your feet up with a few beers.

Description

During this tour you will visit the Cerro Verde Volcano, a dormant volcano covered now by a dense nebulous jungle of impressive beauty and converted into a National Park, a refuge for a rich diversity of plants and animals. At Cerro Verde we will tour an interpretative path called “A Window to Nature” where you will discover the wonders of this impressive location. From this path you will have access to different viewpoints from which you will be able to admire, some impressive views of the Volcán Izalco, Volcán Ilamatepec, and the Volcán Dormido, of a boiler type called Lago Coatepeque.
